Necktie situation in 2025

Hello. I am Lazio, an original goods production company in Shibuya, Tokyo.

I have made the following observations about the necktie situation in the year 2025.

With the spread of office casual and the establishment of remote working, the position of the necktie in the Japanese fashion world is changing dramatically. Neckties were once considered a “must-have” for businessmen, but dress codes have been relaxed at many companies, and the no-necktie style has become the norm. More flexible dress codes are being adopted, particularly by technology companies and start-ups, and this trend is spreading to traditional large corporations as well.

Globally, however, the future of the necktie is not necessarily bleak. Rather, their value as a fashion item to be “chosen and worn” is being reevaluated. In Europe and the United States, there is a growing tendency to view ties as an item that expresses specialness and respect by being worn on formal occasions and ceremonies. There is also a growing interest in ties made from high-quality materials that can be used for a long time from the standpoint of sustainability.

In order for the necktie to once again become an item of interest, the following directions are possible

1) Diversification of design: Developing not only traditional, conservative designs, but also modern, artistic patterns and textures that work well with casual wear.

2) Pursuit of practicality: Adoption of new materials with practical functions, such as wrinkle resistance and water repellency.

3) Sustainability: Use of environmentally friendly materials and production processes

4)Styling proposals: Proposing ways to combine business suits with casual wear as well as business suits

5) Proposal of traditional Japanese patterns with inbound customers in mind

Based on these changes, it can be said that neckties are certainly shifting from a “necessity” to a “luxury item. This change can be verified from the following points:

First, the motive for purchasing ties has shifted from “out of necessity” to “as a means of self-expression. There is a growing trend, especially among the younger generation, to wear neckties selectively according to TPO.

The price range is also polarizing. From reasonably priced ties for daily use to high-end brand ties with a high artistic quality, there is now a choice to suit every purpose.

Furthermore, the occasions in which they are worn are also diversifying. They are being used as fashion accents not only for formal occasions such as weddings, but also for more casual occasions such as parties and social events.

This trend suggests new possibilities for the tie industry. While the market for ties as a necessity is shrinking, niche markets that specialize in unique designs and high-quality products are rather finding opportunities for growth.

The necktie industry must continue to evolve in response to changes in consumer values and work styles.

As a long-time industry participant, neckties are one of my most important items.

I would like to continue to examine the tie from various angles and continue to create ties that will please everyone.
